Out of nothing: Little Canticle 46

Today's post is part of another collection of meditations entitled Little Canticles that may, in due course, be built as a companion to The Cross and The Cosmos.

LITTLE CANTICLE 46

Out of nothing, except your love, you created the Universe.

In the deep fires of that love, you composed sublime rhythms, liberated beauty and forged forces so intricate that only your wisdom would ever comprehend the totality.

Stars, moons and planets drew themselves together following your commands.

Where there was no substance, you brought it forth.

Where there was no order, you fashioned it.

All things speak of your glory and in the firmament is your song.

You move in the deep mysteries of space and are familiar with its very boundaries.

All that the eye can behold, all that the ear can hear and all that can be probed by the instruments of humankind, tell of the wonder of your might.

As a further mark of your love, and after incomprehensible events of preparation, you brought forth men and women with the capacity to perceive of you. You gave them a special responsibility for this tiny speck amidst the vastness.

Intricately woven forces had made this earth bountiful with plants and animals: then you allowed us, your beloved creatures to share your pleasure in the universe.

Let us sing and dance and give praise for all that you have given; let our thanksgiving ring out in the far reaches of existence and be acceptable before your throne, O Lord, our strength and our Creator.

Ten thousand billion suns - A scintilla of God’s Universe
It is currently thought that the Universe has at least 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars! Hence the use of the word ‘scintilla’ for a mere ten thousand billion.

This beautiful head of roses in our garden, which are giving off a delightful perfume in the morning sun, seems a fitting picture to link to the sonnet 'Evolution and Beauty'. Let the picture take you there. It is a surprise because it is growing high on a bush of otherwise pure yellow roses: amazing!
