The Great Machines of Harvest

One of the most amazing aspects of our tiny planet is surely the regularity of our harvests - even though some fail. This is the time of year we celebrate our harvests and 'We plough the fields and scatter the good seed ...' has been part of many harvest celebrations. This hymn takes a more contemporary view - but can be sung to the familiar tune.

THE GREAT MACHINES OF HARVEST
The great machines of harvest
Have cleared the golden fields
Of wheat and rye and barley:
Now all their precious yields
Are milled to help to feed us
With crops from many parts:
So thank God for his bounty
With ever grateful hearts

All good gifts around us
Are sent from heaven above
So thank the Lord,
O thank the Lord
For all his love

Throughout the world the farmers
Sow seeds of many strains
Which God then brings to fulness
Through sun and wind and rains.
By many means of transport
They’re brought so we can feed
Three times a day; be thankful
We’ve never been in need

Chorus

The crops the world produces
Should leave no-one unfed
But millions have died starving
Through thoughtlessness and greed.
At harvest time in our land
Lord give us grace that we
May think of those who hunger
And ever humble be

Chorus

Ten thousand billion suns - A scintilla of God’s Universe

Ten thousand billion suns - A scintilla of God’s Universe
It is currently thought that the Universe has at least 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars! Hence the use of the word ‘scintilla’ for a mere ten thousand billion.

This beautiful head of roses in our garden, which are giving off a delightful perfume in the morning sun, seems a fitting picture to link to the sonnet 'Evolution and Beauty'. Let the picture take you there. It is a surprise because it is growing high on a bush of otherwise pure yellow roses: amazing!
